Speak Up About the Library

Monday, January 30th, 2006

At the next NDDC Downtown Forum on Feb. 7, we’ll be discussing the public library — in particular the value it brings to downtown and what downtown stakeholders want from the library. Director Lynne Young will be our guest for a Downtown Forum that will take a slightly different shape this month. Lynne is in the midst of a strategic planning process for the public library, and she will bring along one of her consultants, Jan Feye-Stukas, to moderate a discussion about the future of this precious resource. Together, Lynne and Jan will lead the Downtown Forum participants through a moderated focus group about the public library: its future, its space needs, what it does well, what it could do better, what it offers downtown. Please join us for a lively discussion — and bring along a friend or neighbor who loves to read.

As usual, the NDDC Downtown Forum will be held the first Tuesday of the month (Feb. 7) at 8 a.m. at the Archer House lower-level conference room. Coffee and cookies will be provided. See you there.

Enough with the Teasing

Monday, January 30th, 2006

I’ve revealed that Spider John Koerner will be performing in Northfield. However, I haven’t shared minor details like the date, time and place.

…well okay then…it’s Thursday, February 23rd at the Grand, with two 45 minute sets, between 8 and 10 pm.

What do College Students Want…

Sunday, January 29th, 2006

…in Downtown Northfield?

We’ve heard, among other things, an all-night diner, a 400-person capacity night club, and bike racks…but we’re sure there’s much more.

The ACT (Acting in the Community Together) Center at Carleton College will be firing up their annual civic engagement series, entitled “Bursting the Bubble”, starting February 1st. The focus of the series is for students to find out how to become truly engaged citizens.

The NDDC celebrates this energy and inquisitiveness. We also think the civic engagement can, and should, be a two-way street. We’re delighted that the Carleton students are asking how they can better serve our community, we’d also like to ask them how our community can better serve the college students. Let’s figure out how to make this an on-going dialogue.

Friday, January 27th, 2006

As reported on this website last Friday, Spider John Koerner is coming to Northfield. In today’s (1/27/2006) Strib “Scene”, it becomes clear that Spider John will have to tear himself away from hanging out with his fellow movie stars Matt Dillon and Lili Taylor at Palmer’s to do the gig.

…ah, the sacrifices made for art…
