Northfield Artists Storm the Twin Cities

Monday, July 31st, 2006

I met with Bob Gregory-Bjorklund on Friday, to discuss Third Thursday programming at the Grand, and he tipped me off to some Northfielders participating in the Fringe Festival. It was exciting to hear about local artists taking the stage on a regional level.

No doubt their efforts will contribute to Northfield’s reputation as an Art Town.

He sent me more details later. I share them (without editing) below:

(So, after checking out all the offerings of ArtSwirl, consider catching some of what might be described as “Northfielders Do the Bryant Lake Bowl”…)

National Recognition as an Art Town

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

The NDDC’s August Monthly Forum will focus on how Northfield can be more widely recognized as an “Art Town”. The ArtsPlan’06 Committee, a joint initiative of the City of Northfield and the NAG-NDDC Arts, Recreation and Culture Committee, will review their findings of Northfield’s Asset Inventory and their intial work on developing Strategic Initiatives.

The NDDC’s Downtown Forum is held at 8 am on the first Tuesday of every month in the lower-level conference room of the Archer House. The public is welcome and coffee and cookies will be served.

Vintage Band Music Festival Hits the Big Time

Friday, July 28th, 2006

The St. Paul Pioneer Press had an article today about the Vintage Band Music Festival. Titled “Classical musicmakers - Forget the latest fads. At this music festival, everything old is new again”, the article did a nice job hinting at the wide variety of music that we’ll have available here in Northfield over the next few days.

So don’t be surprised if some out-of-towners with “northern accents” ask you where they can find the ophicleide (shown here being played by the Wisconsin 1st Brigade Band, performing in Bridge Square, Saturday at 7:30 pm) and the euphonium. Simply direct them to the nearest Festival Schedule and say “Welcome and have fun!”.

Where’s Paul?

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Well, of course he’s all over town, keeping the Vintage Band Music Festival hopping. Which, by the way, continues with concerts throughout Northfield all weekend long.

However, he’s only in the Northfield Entertainment Guide 9 times instead of the promised 10. This just in from Rob Shanilac, at the Northfield Entertainment Guide:

PAUL’S MISSING! Between the time the Official Vintage Band Festival Program left proofing and went to press one of the 10 images of Paul Niemisto disappeared from the publication. Consequently the contest to find 10 imagesof Paul (page 1) is impossible to complete (though some readers think they have!). Undoubtedly there were many tasks left to do and Paul simply jumped off the page.

So, if you, like me, gave up after only finding him 9 times, submit your answer for possible prizes.

Perform an Unnatural Act…

…Polka in the middle of Division Street.

Well, this sort of thing probably goes on across the border in Wisconsin all the time. However, it’s not often that you can dance the Polka in Main Street, Minnesota, where even a Schottishe in Central Park might be considered risque.

So tonight’s your chance to take a step or two (actually three) on the wild side. Come on down(town), and dance to DyVersCo Polka Band…

…in the 400 block of Division Street.
