Carleton Students Love Downtown

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Ana_Lagunez_08.jpgMy buddy Joe Hargis tipped me off to this story.

The Carleton College student web magazine (SHOUT), is featuring some photos of one of my favorite subjects through the lens of one the downtown-loving students, Ana Lagunez (class of ‘08). There are some really cool shots of some familiar sights. The shot to the left is the “former” sign on Willie’s Shoe Service.

Thanks to Joe for the hot tip and Ana for the fun photos.

Hot Times for Cold Nights

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Hemingway_KeyWest.jpgYeah, it’s cold outside. However, there are plenty of hot times to be had in Downtown, Uptown, and all around Northfield this weekend.

On Friday, the evening kicks off with the Cajun Hot Soles at the Upstairs Rueb, produced by ArtOrg, from 7 to 11 pm. Experience a Louisiana dance hall in a Minnesota club atmosphere. At 8 pm, it’s the annual Carleton Faculty Guest Artist Concert, with the David Singley Quartet at the Carleton College Concert Hall. Then it’s actually opera, yes opera, with the performance of Ravel’s “The Bewitched Child” at Urness Recital Hall, on the St. Olaf College campus. There’s also the Key West Rejects (pictured at above?) at Froggy Bottoms. Finally, It’s Norwegian Cowboy at the Tavern Lounge, on the river side of the Archer House.

Saturday night starts off with the Gao Hong Concert, 6 pm at the Northfield Middle School. It’s a celebration of Chinese New Year that will benefit the Northfield Rotary Club International Youth Exchange. There’s Caribbean Night at the Contented Cow, with the grand opening of the Snug. Finally, it’s Relativity, with Toby Jensen, Sandy Jensen and Linda Grimm, at the Tavern Lounge.

The weekend doesn’t end until Monday morning, and Sunday night will offer a Northern Roots (Music) Session at the Cow.

Skatepark to be Realized?

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

skatepark-update.jpgToday’s (Wednesday, January 23rd) Northfield News has a front page story about the progress of the proposed Skatepark. According to the article, many of the pieces are falling in place and the facility may find a home in downtown’s Ames Park.

The NDDC hosted the Skatepark Coalition at its May, 2007 Downtown Forum. We were very impressed with the group’s research, analysis, and recommendations. Spokesperson Joe McGowan suggested that there would be economic benefits from such an investment, a theory confirmed by advisor Zach Pruitt, referring to his experience in Rochester.

Apparently the City Council was impressed too. Pictured to the left is Coalition Member and Union of Youth Vice President Ruth Amerman speaking to the Council.

It would appear to be a crucial time for the Skatepark. Now would be the time to speak up…

…and/or write out a check.

Caribbean Experience in Downtown Northfield

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

bob_marley_guitar.jpgWord on the street is that this Saturday, January 26th, there’ll be a Caribbean Experience in Downtown Northfield. It’s called Caribbean Day.

Apparently Tim Sellar’s of Tiny’s Dogs All Day will be selling “Tropical Hot Dogs”…perhaps with Jamaican jerk spicing?

The Contented Cow will be featuring free appetizers, tropical drink specials, and a Limbo Contest.

I’ve even heard rumors that the women of Rare Pair have something in mind too.

So, stop by Fine Groove and get your Rastaman Vibration on early.

Oh, and I’m so appreciative of the opportunity to post a picture of Bob Marley on this site.

Kows, Klubs, and KRLX

Friday, January 18th, 2008

KRLXrock.pngKRLX 88.1 FM, Carleton College’s radio station, will host its first-ever music festival this Saturday, January 19, 2008. The free, all-ages festival, known as the KRLX Winter Rock, will include six different bands from Northfield and the Twin Cities playing at four different venues around downtown.

The event, structured as a series of concerts, will begin at 6:30 pm at Grezzo Gallery, continue at 7:45 with a performance at Hogan Brothers’ Acoustic Cafe, hop an 8:45 bus for a visit to Carleton’s on-campus nightclub, the Cave, and end with a midnight show at The Contented Cow.

Personally, I’d call it a Klub Krawl. It’s another sign of the vibrancy of Northfield’s creative community.
