The Perks of Power

TheBigDoughnutSometimes it’s more about who you know than what you know…then again, maybe it’s all about the years of loyalty.

At any rate, here I am some minutes before the official kick-off to Crazy Daze with perhaps the first Alaskan Doughnut sold today.  With such a busy day for Downtown Northfield, I needed to get an early start. (more…)

Annual Training Regime in Full Swing

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Training4DoughnutsAs some of you may be aware, I take Crazy Daze very seriously.  In particular, I strive to be ready for the Alaskan Doughnuts offered by Quality Bakery.

This year is no different.  As you can see, I’m steadily building my capacity.

There’s more than doughnuts to Crazy Daze, however.  There are sidewalk sales, retail bargains and food specials…including the Alaskan Doughnuts.

There’s lots of exciting entertainment too.  This year’s events include costume contesting, skateboard demonstrating, seed spitting, paper throwing, hula hooping, waiter racing and pet adopting.  For more information, see the Crazy Daze Poster.

So join the fun and check out Crazy Daze.  It’s this Thursday, July 23rd, starting at 7 a.m. in Downtown Northfield.

ClarkStAndersonvilleIn today’s Wall Street Journal, there is a piece by Joseph Epstein called “In Praise of Shopkeepers“.  It compares the shopping districts of Evanston, Illinois and the Chicago neighborhood of Andersonville.

Evanston, according to the writer, now caters to “the transient class”, featuring Starbucks, Burger King, and The Gap.  Andersonville, on the other hand, has an independent bookstore, an excellent shoe store, and “an elegant bakery”.  The author views the former district as uninteresting and the latter district as full of experiences of “delightful surprise”. Way Cool Thing…in Downtown Northfield

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

WayCoolThingCheck out this way cool thing in Downtown Northfield.  It’s a horse tethered to a hitching post.

The horse sculpture is courtesy of swag (423 Division Street).  This one-of-a-kind store/gallery offers a great selection of regionally-designed and hand-crafted items, a number of which are of dramatic size. (more…)
