Downtown Northfield is Open for Business

Monday, September 27th, 2010

…at least most of it.

I’ve been accused, more than once, of skepticism.  Personally, I think a little skepticism can be a good thing.  I find that rumors of Mark Twain’s death are often greatly exaggerated.

I had heard that the Archer House and most of the rest of the west side of the 200 block of Division Street were going to be without power for “maybe weeks”.  Here’s manager Todd Byhre, open for business as of 9 a.m. today.  Todd said that Xcel Energy was able to turn the power back on this morning. Volunteers Will Be Needed for Clean-up

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

As of noon today, police, fire, and guard workers on the scene of the flooding were hopeful that the worst was past us.  However, they would not rule out a second cresting.  The disaster response team remains on alert.

Eventually, the water level will drop and the river will return to its more familiar, and friendly, condition.  It will then be safe to begin the big job of cleaning up.

Volunteers will be needed, and greatly appreciated; clean-up may take two to four weeks.  “Northfield-Dot-Org”, or Northfield Community On-line, in cooperation with the Emergency Disaster Command Center, has set up a special page for coordinating people interested in volunteering.

You can find it (and volunteer) at: http://northfield.org/flood

Flooding Emergency Notice for Downtown Business Owners

Saturday, September 25th, 2010

We just received the following message from Councilor Buckheit:

“The city says that downtown business owners will be allowed into their property to assess damage later today – west side owners will meet at Ames Mill, east side at Bridge Square. We did not get a definite time about when this would happen, but I wanted to let you know so you could get any information out to downtown folks.”

We will relay additional information as it becomes available.

It is, after all, late September.  However, the local harvests are still rich in fresh produce and artisan foods, so be sure to check out the Farmers’ Market and Market Fair this weekend. (more…)
