Dear Mr. Williams,

We are writing to respond to your recent letter to Mayor Mary Rossing in which you state that you are considering a consolidation of USPS operations in Northfield, Minnesota to the USPS “Carrier Annex,” two miles south of our downtown.  In our view, the proposed consolidation does not make economic sense for the USPS and is not in the interest of the Northfield community. Strongly, Courteously, Oppose the Closing of the Downtown Post Office

As most of you are aware, there has been much discussion about the proposed closing of the historic post office in downtown Northfield by the United States Postal Service (USPS).  The NDDC is determined to oppose this closing.

The issue was discussed at the March 16th NDDC Design and Planning Committee meeting. City Administrator Tim Madigan is a regular participant and the “Downtown Councilors”, Betsey Buckheit and Suzie Nakasian, were also present. The initial outlines of a strategy were developed. (more…)

What if there was a flood and you weren’t ready?

Spring snow melt will begin in earnest during the next few days as temperatures climb into the 40s. This means folks living and/or doing business on the banks of the Cannon River would be well-advised to implement a plan for protecting their property against flood damage.

The City of Northfield has announced that assisting private parties with property protection in non-emergency situations is #6 on a list of 9 items in its Emergency Protocol for flooding. City staff have conducted several public information meetings about flood preparation and posted links to a number of resources on the City’s website, Community Resources for Flood Preparedness.

Downtown Northfield is an Economic Driver

Downtown is a powerful driver for the Northfield economy.  Taken as a single entity, it is one of our largest employers.  It is also home to most of the businesses in our community, more than two-thirds of all of the firms in Northfield are located in the downtown.

However, downtown’s contributions to the Northfield economy go beyond the many jobs and business located in our historic central business district.  Downtown is one of Northfield’s most powerful assets in attracting new businesses and new residents. (more…)
